Former Rep. Anthony D. Weiner has just received his first formal endorsement for his potential run for New York City mayor — from Rep. Keith Ellison, Minnesota Democrat.

Mr. Ellison offered the endorsement Thursday, calling Mr. Weiner a “good guy” who deserves a second chance at politics. Mr. Weiner’s political career came crashing down after well-publicized photos of his half-naked body appeared on social media. Mr. Weiner initially claimed his account had been hacked but then backtracked and admitted responsibility. After more scandalous details came to light, he resigned his seat in Congress.

A magazine article published this week suggested Mr. Weiner has adopted a now-or-never approach to a political run for New York City mayor. And while some see that road as closed, others are applauding.

“Anthony’s a good guy in my opinion,” said Mr. Ellison, quoted in Politico. “Now, he should’ve came clean once he got busted, you know, and I’m sorry he didn’t do that and his [wife, Huma Abedin’s] sorry he didn’t do that.”

But everybody is worthy of forgiveness, he said.

“Look man, nobody here is perfect,” Mr. Ellison said, as quoted in Politico. “Anthony was a great congressman in my opinion, and he’s dealt with his issues and everybody has issues. So I’d love to see Anthony Weiner be mayor of New York. I hereby endorse him.”
