Secretary of State John Kerry may not be returning to U.S. soil with a new Middle East peace deal, or a diplomatic solution to how America might best deal with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s reported resignation – which leaves in charge the less friendly President Mahmoud Abbas. And the question of Iran’s nuclear program still hovers.
But he did win a beer bet with his Canadian counterpart, John Baird. And that means Mr. Kerry gets to carry home a whole case of beer — which he vowed, in a CNN report, not to immediately drink.
“I want to make sure everybody in America knows we’re not going to drink this now,” Mr. Kerry said, accepting the case of beer during a Thursday meeting with Canada’s foreign minister at the G8 conference in London, CNN reported.
The bet involved Tuesday’s world championship hockey match between the U.S. and Canadian’s women’s team. Mr. Kerry initiated the challenge to Mr. Baird, via Twitter.
His Tuesday tweet: “Bet case of MA Sam Adams vs. yr Molson Canadian that US women best Canada tonight as Ice Hockey World Champs. Game on?”
And Mr. Baird’s tweeted reply: “Game on! But John, in addition to #molsoncanadian, I’ll double-up with some of Ottawa’s finest @beausallnatural. Go Canada Go!”
The U.S. won, 3-2.
Mr. Kerry took ownership of one case of Canadian brew but is still due the second case, Beau’s All Natural. CNN said that case would be delivered at a later date.
Next up: A Baird-Kerry bet on the next Senators-Bruins hockey game, CNN reported.
