Authorities are trying to determine why a man visiting a Home Depot in a suburban California community on Wednesday took handsaws and calmly began cutting his arms to the bone.

The name of the man is not known, the Los Angeles Times reported. But his behavior shocked: Witnesses said he sawed until he passed out from blood loss.

“He just began sawing away,” West Covina Police spokesman Cpl. Rudy Lopez told the Times. “He was pretty much intent on doing what he did. Nobody noticed him until he started doing what he was doing.”

At that point, shoppers panicked and dialed 911, the Times reported. He was unconscious by the time police arrived.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, but his condition is still unknown.
