Millions of cars manufactured by Japanese automakers have been recalled due to defects found with the air bag system.
The models impacted include Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Mazda, and most of the cars are from 2001, 2002 and 2003, CNN reported.
Toyota is recalling 1.7 cars, including its Corolla, Matrix and Camry brands. Nissan has recalled 480,000, CNN said. Mazda and Honda have recalled 45,000 and more than 1.1 million, respectively.
Passenger side air bags will be replaced, CNN said.
“It is possible that the passenger front air bag inflators in affected vehicles may deploy with too much pressure, which may cause the inflator casing to rupture and could result in injury,” the company said in a statement reported by CNN.
Honda reported one crash already in which the air bag in the front passenger seat had deployed with too much pressure and had ruptured. And Toyota reported five, CNN said.
But the company said it’s not aware of any injuries due to the flawed air bag systems, CNN said.
