Two people were killed and 36 others injured after a charter bus turned over along the in President George Bush Turnpike near Dallas on Thursday morning.

Sixteen patients are in critical condition while many others suffered only minor injuries, NBC 5 reports. Initial reports said that as many as 40 people were trapped inside the bus until help arrived.

Authorities said the bus was traveling northbound when it veered off for an unexplained reason. The bus hit a rubber attenuator and traveled back across all lanes of the turnpike, onto the grassy median, and then up and along the middle concrete barrier, flipping over and sliding on its side, NBC 5 reports.

The bus landed on the same side as the exit doors, trapping the passengers inside.

The National Traffic Safety Board announced it was launching a team to investigate the crash, NBC 5 reports.
