A spokesman for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus said a drive-by shooter hit an elephant in Tupelo, Miss., on Tuesday.
The elephant was not seriously hurt, said Melinda Hartline in The Associated Press report. And no other circus animals were hurt in the incident, she said.
The shooting took place in the early morning hours. Police Chief Tony Carleton said a driver went by the outside pen where the elephant was held about 2 a.m. and fired a shot, AP reported.
Authorities are investigating.
