Sen. Jeff Flake, a rising conservative star who many see as potential White House material, says the Republican Party’s embrace of same-sex marriage is a sure thing.
“I think that’s inevitable,” he said, during a Sunday talk show on NBC. The political air has shifted to the point where the party won’t be able to run a successful candidate without latching on to the issue, he said.
On NBC, Mr. Flake — who’s a Mormon — was asked if he could support a White House candidate from the Republican Party who supported same-sex marriage.
“There will be one, and that I think he’ll receive Republican support, or she will,” Mr. Flake said, as quoted by United Press International. “So I think that yes, that the answer is yes.”
At the same time, Mr. Flake said he would never personally support same-sex marriage.
“I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman,” he said, UPI quoted. “I still hold to the traditional definition of marriage.”
