University of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware, who evoked tears from fans, fellow players and coach Rick Pitino when he broke his leg during Sunday’s match-up with Duke, should be fine, doctors said.
His emergency surgery went well, and Mr. Ware should be able to return to normal play, NPR reports.
“Ware underwent successful surgery Sunday night to repair the gruesome open fracture of his right tibia he suffered during the Cardinals’ 85-63 win over Duke in the Midwest Regional final,” the Louisville Courier-Journal reported on Monday morning.”Ware is hopeful he can return to Louisville after Tuesday, then join the Cardinals as they advance to the Final Four in Atlanta, his hometown.”
Fred Hina, rhe university’s sports medicine doctor, said Mr. Ware’s recovery would take a while. But the injury is not career-ending, Mr. Hina said, as cited by NPR.
Mr. Ware is a sophomore. He broke his leg with a little more than six minutes left in the first half, hitting the floor hard after he tried to block a three-pointer. His right leg snapped between the ankle and knee.
