The selling price of a signed Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album far exceeded expectations and auctioned at $290,500.
Predictions were for the album, which was signed by all four Beatles, to sell around $30,000.
It’s “one of the most spectacular jewels in our auction,” said Heritage Auctions, based in Dallas, prior to the sale, BBC reported.
One Beatles expert, Perry Cox, quoted by the BBC said before its sale: “With my being thoroughly immersed in Beatles collectibles for over 30 years, it takes something extraordinarily special to excite me, but I consider this to be one of the top two items of Beatles memorabilita I’ve ever seen — the other being a signed copy of ’Meet The Beatles.’ “
The Hollywood Reporter says the album — which has a high-gloss cover and gatefold — is believed to have been signed shortly after its release date, June 1967.
An unnamed buyer from the United States who lives in the Midwest had the winning bid.
