The Washington Redskins plan to meet with Chris Cooley sometime next week about the possibility of him returning to the team.
General manager Bruce Allen announced the meeting at a National Press Club luncheon on Friday, and coach Mike Shanahan later confirmed it.
“We’ve always left the door open for Chris,” Shanahan said.
The Redskins released Cooley, the franchise’s all-time leading pass catcher among tight ends, on Aug. 28. after eight seasons with the team.
At the time, Shanahan said the move would give Cooley an opportunity to explore whether he could find a chance to start on another team.
Washington is open to bringing Cooley back because it has only three tight ends and one fullback. Cooley, 30, played both positions during the preseason.
“It’s not like we’re very deep at tight end,” Shanahan said.
Shanahan offered no guarantee Cooley would be resigned.
“I can’t tell you for sure what’s going to happen,” Shanahan said.
