Washington Redskins fans aren’t the only ones who show concern when Robert Griffin III takes a hit and stays on the ground. Sunday after a play in which the rookie quarterback dived toward the end zone, trainers were worried enough to see if Griffin suffered a concussion.
“I was just a little dizzy. When I dove, I got the ball inside the pylon, I thought it was a touchdown. I got up to celebrate and everything on the left was on the right and everything on the right was on the left,” Griffin said Wednesday. “So I just fell back down and took a second, stood up and I was fine. They tried to check me and see if I had a concussion, but I didn’t have a concussion. I was just a little bit dizzy. Nothing to worry about.”
Any head injury is a concern, especially for the franchise quarterback who went to the ground with contact 28 times Sunday.
Griffin did remain on the ground for a few extra seconds on the fourth-quarter play, but he was in the game when Alfred Morris finished the drive with a touchdown. That’s when Griffin was checked by the medical staff.
“They just came to me after we scored the touchdown and asked me what happened. I told them I was just a little bit dizzy, nothing to be worried about and they said, ’Just make sure you let us know what’s going on,’” Griffin said. “They followed all the proper protocols, and it wasn’t anything too bad. It’s not like I was out there wobbling or running to the wrong sideline. It’s all good.”
Garcon progressing
Receiver Pierre Garcon’s injured right foot is improving, but he’s not sure whether he’ll play at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Garcon was limited in practice Wednesday. Afterward, he spoke to reporters for the first time in about two weeks.
“There’s a lot of progress going along with the injury, and it’s coming along very well,” he said. “It’s very frustrating, but it’s part of football. You have to deal with problems as they come. I’m trying to heal up as fast as I can to get back out there and help the team.”
Kyle Shanahan fined
Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan conceded in a statement Monday that he behaved in the wrong way by berating a replacement official in the final seconds of the Redskins’ 38-31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The NFL announced Wednesday it fined Shanahan $25,000 for his actions that led to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Shanahan explained that he was trying to tell the official that the game was not over after a false-start penalty.
“Anytime you do what he did, you’re going to get fined. That’s the nature of the game,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “If you don’t abide by the rules, you’re going to pay a penalty. Usually after a guy pays 25 grand, they usually learn very quickly.”
Injury updates
• Left tackle Trent Williams (bone bruise in right knee) and cornerback Cedric Griffin (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday. Safety Brandon Meriweather (sprained ligaments in left knee), Garcon and running back Evan Royster (posterior cruciate ligament strain in right knee) were limited, Shanahan said.
