OPINION:
Melinda Wadsley of Ames, Iowa, abruptly resigned from the GOP Electoral College, stating that she “could not in good conscience vote for party nominee Mitt Romney.” Her concerns are over the relationship between the GOP platform and Rep. Ron Paul, Texas Republican (really, libertarian). Who is she going to vote for in November? Would it be President Obama, an extreme socialist who is further left than GOP moderates and conservatives? Or is she not going to vote at all, as a protest?
Clearly this election is about a significant difference between the GOP candidate and the president. Ms. Wadsley is way off-base if she believes the libertarian contingent will do better under a continued and expanded socialist model than it would under Mr. Romney. She needs to put aside her emotional demeanor and position of choice, as many have already done, and vote for the best of the two to get this country back on track.
This also applies to all libertarians who may vote with their conscience in a wasted effort for candidate Gary Johnson. If they truly want to have an impact in the next four years, they need to support the election of Mr. Romney. They will then have an opportunity to work to provide ideas to the new GOP president. This won’t be the case with Mr. Obama. If they don’t back Mr. Romney, they may as well dissolve their party and all go home.
