D.C. police were working a barricade situation at an apartment building in Congress Heights after a shooting in the same block, officials said Monday evening.
Metropolitan Police Department officials estimated the barricade started in the 1300 block of Congress Street in Southeast around 1 a.m. Monday. As of 6:30 p.m., the barricade was still active, police said.
Police offered no official word on the incident that started the barricade. A shooting was reported in the same block around 12:30 a.m. Monday. In that incident, a man was shot in the stomach but was conscious and breathing when taken to a hospital.
Shootings in the area, located near the Congress Heights Metro, have become common over the last several months, with a high level of violent activity in the last week, said Ron Moten, founder of the anti-gang organization Peaceoholics.
“For the last six months there were a whole lot of shootings,” said Mr. Moten, who is also running as a “civil rights Republican” for a seat on the D.C. Council.
According to police data from July 12 to Sept. 10, one homicide, three robberies and four assaults with dangerous weapons were reported within 1,000 feet of 1300 Congress Street.
