Dwayne De Rosario’s D.C. United season likely is finished after the reigning MLS MVP suffered a knee injury Tuesday in World Cup qualifying.
Doctors determined De Rosario suffered a Grade III sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his knee in the second half of Canada’s 2-0 loss to Panama in Panama City. He is expected to miss 10-12 weeks, a timetable that will keep him out for the rest of D.C. United’s season.
“DeRo is our captain, a great player and impossible to replace,” said D.C. United coach Ben Olsen in a statement. “With that said, we have talented players that will step up in his absence and this injury will not be an excuse to fall short of goals we set for ourselves as a team at the beginning of the season.”
De Rosario, 34, is Canada’s all-time leading scorer and on Aug. 29 scored his 100th career MLS goal. He has seven goals in 26 games for D.C. United this season and is second in MLS with 12 assists.
