Robert Griffin III was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week, the NFL announced Wednesday.
The rookie quarterback is the first Washington Redskins player to win the award since Clinton Portis in 2008 and the first Redskins rookie since Rod Gardner in 2001.
Griffin was 19 of 26 passing for 320 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Redskins’ 40-32 win at the New Orleans Saints in Sunday’s season opener. His yardage total was the second-best Week 1 showing by a rookie in NFL history, trailing only Cam Newton’s 422 yards for the Carolina Panthers last season.
