Pierre Garcon was pretty confident Sunday afternoon in New Orleans, even after missing three quarters of the Washington Redskins’ victory, that he’d play Week 2 at the St. Louis Rams.

That could still happen, but the wide receiver who was a popular target of Robert Griffin III against the Saints did not practice Wednesday. Garcon’s status for Sunday is uncertain as he has an injured right foot.

“He did not practice today,” a tight-lipped Mike Shanahan said. “We’ll see how he is tomorrow.”

Asked about Garcon’s positive talk a few days earlier potentially being too early to tell, the Redskins’ coach was not willing to give up much information.

“I don’t know,” he said. “He didn’t practice today, so we’ll wait and see how he is tomorrow.”

Walking off the field, Garcon didn’t provide a real update on his condition as much as he performed a cheery act.

“I’m feeling great, feeling good,” said Garcon, who was then asked about his foot. “Everything feels good.”

Garcon insisted in passing that he was still optimistic. “Always, got to be,” he said.

Garcon had four catches for 109 yards at New Orleans, including an 88-yard score on which he injured his foot. Griffin threw to him on his first three passes.

When the injury forced Garcon out, Aldrick Robinson stepped into his role and made four catches for 52 yards.

What happened on blocked punt?

One of the still-unexplained aspects of Sunday’s game at the New Orleans Saints is what happened to cause the blocked punt against the Redskins. Some fans’ initial reaction was to blame safety Reed Doughty, but that might not be accurate.

Doughty repeatedly called it a “missed assignment,” and several looks at the video made it look like linebacker Chris Wilson lost Martez Wilson on the play. He blocked Will Herring, and Wilson was able to get to Rocca unencumbered.

Chris Wilson called it a “communication error.”

“It was no super-duper scheme, just a part of detailing your work each and every day,” he said. “It won’t be accepted, nor will it happen again.”

Extra points

Nose tackle Chris Baker, who missed Sunday’s game, was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice, Shanahan said.
