Not many homeowners can boast about being able to kayak to Old Town Alexandria or ride bikes to National Harbor from their homes. But residents of a five-bedroom, four-bath Colonial in Fort Washington’s Waterside community can do this and much more in a spacious home that features views of the Potomac River.

The house, built in 2003, has all of the bells and whistles you expect to find in a newer home, from hardwood flooring to granite counters.

Situated on a peaceful, tree-lined cul-de-sac on a lot of .67 acres at 8216 Waterside Court, the home is on the market for $819,900.

Windows fill the front of the home, providing plenty of views of the river across the street, which is especially visible in late fall and winter.

As soon as the front door opens, guests are welcomed into a bright and airy two-story foyer. In this center-hall floor plan, an elegant staircase in the middle of the foyer separates the formal living room and formal dining room.

The foyer offers a dramatic entrance into the living room, which has a wide, arched entryway and stately columns. This large room is equally convenient for formal or casual entertaining.

Most of the main level has gleaming hardwood floors, with the exception of the living room, which has white carpeting.

Just in time for the holiday season, the formal dining room is an elegant space in which to enjoy family dinners. In addition to a tray ceiling and sophisticated chandelier, the room has beige and burgundy walls with white chair-rail molding.

The back of the house is completely occupied by an oversized kitchen and family room. A floor-to-ceiling wood-burning fireplace made of stone is the centerpiece of the family room. This room, like many throughout the home, boasts a trendy ceiling fan-light fixture.

While all of the main-level rooms are well-appointed, the kitchen and breakfast room are bound to leave a lasting impression. Measuring 22 by 18 feet, the open kitchen is a work of art with a seemingly endless amount of cabinetry and black granite counters, including a center island that also serves as a breakfast bar.

Recessed lighting and several pendant light fixtures brighten the kitchen in the evening, while walls of windows in the adjacent breakfast room offer plenty of natural lighting during the day. The separate breakfast room feels more like a sunroom. It offers views of the wooded backyard and has a wall of built-ins, crown molding and a ceiling fan.

A guest bedroom and full bathroom are on the main level, and there are four bedrooms and two full baths on the upper level. A hardwood staircase leads to the second floor, which is home to a huge bonus room that rivals the family room. This sun-drenched open loft off the hall has skylights and several windows.

Nearby, double doors open into a huge master-bedroom suite with crown molding, a tray ceiling and a generously sized walk-in closet. The master suite also features a luxurious private bath with a two-person glass-block shower, large soaking tub and his-and-hers sinks.

The remaining three bedrooms share a hall bath. If more sleeping quarters are needed, there’s a room on the lower level, currently used as a playroom, that easily can be converted into a sixth bedroom.

In addition to the playroom, the carpeted lower level has a full bath; a large recreation room with glass doors and a walk-up to the backyard; and unfinished space that is being used as a storage area.

Additional features in the home include a side-entry three-car garage, a custom deck built by the owner and a stone patio.
