NEW YORK (AP) - SURFACING: Microsoft’s first self-made tablet computer goes on sale at its Times Square store in New York at 10 p.m. Eastern time Thursday and on Friday in 60 Microsoft stores in North America.

THE TAB: Surface starts at $499. It will run Windows RT, a slimmed down version of the latest operating system, Windows 8. It comes with a fully functioning suite of Office 2013 programs for word processing, spreadsheets and other business tasks.

ONLINE BACKLOG: Microsoft has been taking pre-orders online. The minimum wait time for new online orders is one to two weeks.
