During the vice presidential debate Thursday night, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. did nothing to help President Obama get re-elected (“Biden meltdown burns Obama campaign,” Web, Friday). In an attempt to rattle his opponent, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, he was condescending, disrespectful and downright unpresidential.

Mr. Biden childishly laughed through the first half of the debate and then, when that tactic didn’t work, he became angry and frustrated until he began to lose his voice. This made him come across as someone as old and as tired as President Obama’s failing economic and anti-life policies.

By contrast, Mr. Ryan looked fresh, humble, spirited and optimistic. He held his ground on all the issues and presented viewers with real hope for a positive future — especially where morality and religious freedom are concerned.

To take a lesson from Clint Eastwood, Mr. Biden would have fared better had he just decided to skip the debate and send out President Obama’s empty chair.
