D.C. police on Thursday identified a man fatally shot near Gallaudet University.

Gregory Darnell Troxler, 21,  was fatally shot just before 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of 8th Street Northeast, about a block from the university, for a sound of gunshots. Mr. Troxler died from his injuries at the scene.

While the shooting occurred just a short distance from one of the entrances to the university campus, a police spokesman said officials do not think the shooting was related to the university.
