Jeff Bzdelik, Wake Forest. The only credible challenger to Mike Krzyzewski as the ACC’s King of Consonants has yet to field a competitive team in two years, much to the consternation of the Demon Deacons faithful. With a 5-27 mark in ACC play in that span, their ire is understandable.
Bill Carmody, Northwestern. He’s about achieved emeritus status for this list. Carmody averaged nearly 20 wins over the last three seasons, but he’s still under .500 for his 12 years in Evanston and has yet to reach the NCAA tournament. Also, Big Ten scoring leader John Shurna is gone.
Travis Ford, Oklahoma State. Should Ford be in trouble after back-to-back NCAA tournament misses? That’s debatable. But anytime a few years of mediocrity meet a billionaire booster (which the Cowboys have), a coaching change is a possibility.
Ben Howland, UCLA. Memories are short in Westwood, where Howland has alternated round-of-32 exits and seasons without NCAA bids in the four years since the Bruins’ three consecutive Final Four appearances.
Andy Kennedy, Mississippi. What a conundrum. Kennedy has won 20 games in five of his six years at a school not known for hoops. He also doesn’t have an NCAA tournament appearance in that span. On the surface, it looks like Seth Greenberg’s run at Virginia Tech — solid but, after a while, unsatisfying.
Herb Sendek, Arizona State. The former N.C. State boss has a new athletic director and a combined 22 victories over the last two seasons. These are not the things job security is built upon, especially in what was a weak Pac-10/Pac-12 the last few years.
