FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III briefed members of Congress Wednesday on former CIA Director David H. Petraeus’ resignation, a congressional source said.
Mr. Mueller testified with FBI Deputy Director Sean Joyce on Capitol Hill, and Acting CIA Director Michael Morell was expected to conduct his own briefing on the matter later Wednesday.
The FBI is under fire for uncovering Mr. Petraeus’ affair during an investigation many weeks ago but withholding information about it from the White House until Election Day.
Mr. Petraeus is expected to testify before Congress on the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, according to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Permanent Select Intelligence Committee.
Lawmakers will focus what the CIA knew before, during and after the Benghazi attack, and whether its account differs from that of the White House.
However, they also are likely to ask about his affair, whether it compromised national security and whether he disclosed any classified information to his biographer, Paula Broadwell, with whom he had the affair.
Mr. Petraeus resigned as CIA director on Friday amid revelations he had an extramarital affair.
