A former employee of the District of Columbia’s tax office has admitted in federal court that she filed hundreds of fraudulent tax returns, netting $4 million in refunds.
On Wednesday, 44-year-old Kimberle Y. Davis pleaded guilty to first-degree theft and conspiracy to defraud the government.
Prosecutors say Davis worked part-time in 2009 and 2010 for a Washington-based tax service while working for the city.
Over the 2008 and 2009 tax seasons, prosecutors say Davis helped file 282 fraudulent D.C. tax returns and about 973 fraudulent federal returns. She gave clients fake charity receipts to fool auditors.
The long-running scheme produced refunds of more than $14.7 million dating to 2006.
Davis is at least the third employee under Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi to be caught stealing in his 12-year tenure.
