WASHINGTON (AP) — A new Associated Press-GfK poll finds that President Obama continues to enjoy strong support among women, minorities and independents.
Mr. Obama holds advantages over likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney in the areas of empathy, sincerity, likability and the handling of social issues.
But Americans are split over which candidate can best handle the economy — a division that could open a path for Mr. Romney as the Nov. 6 election nears.
Half of registered voters said they would back Mr. Obama in November; 42 percent favored Mr. Romney.
Mr. Romney does best among whites without college degrees. Only 5 percent of black voters support Mr. Romney.
