PARIS (AP) - After starting off 10-0 in the French Open’s first round, American women went 0-2 on Tuesday.

Who would have thought 13-time major champion Serena Williams would be one of the ones who failed to advance? After all, she was unbeaten in 46 previous first-round Grand Slam matches.

Before Williams lost in three sets to Virginie Razzano of France, Jamie Hampton of Auburn, Ala., retired because of a lower back injury while trailing 6-4, 4-3 against Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands.

Hampton said her back “went out” when she hit a backhand during the first set.

The 10 U.S. women who won their opening matches gave the country its largest group in the second round at Roland Garros since 11 made it in 2003.
