BOSTON — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia left Monday’s game with a jammed right thumb. Pedroia apparently was injured while diving for Danny Worth’s grounder at the end of the fifth inning against the Detroit Tigers. He was replaced by Nick Punto. Pedroia was batting .294 with five homers and 20 RBI.
• The Red Sox activated outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the seven-day concussion disabled list and optioned outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin to Triple-A Pawtucket. Sweeney, who was injured May 19, is batting.311 in 34 games
• New York Mets shortstop Justin Turner was helped off the field after spraining his right ankle during a rundown against Philadelphia. David Wright moved to shortstop from third base. Wright was at shortstop for the second time in his career, He played there in the eighth and ninth innings last Aug. 7, when Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy were hurt in a game.
• Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said there is a “50-50” chance suspended slugger Manny Ramirez will join the team when his 50-game drug ban expires Wednesday. Ramirez was scheduled to play Monday for Triple-A Sacramento, but the Tuesday plan was yet to be determined.

Florida No. 1 overall seed for NCAA Division I tourney
NEW YORK — Florida heads into the NCAA tournament as college baseball’s top team. The Gators appreciate the honor, but they’re interested only in finishing No. 1 at the College World Series.
Florida (42-18) was selected Monday as the top seed for the 64-team tournament and will host one of 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals that begin Friday.
The other national seeds, in order, are: UCLA, Florida State, Baylor, Oregon, North Carolina, LSU and two-time defending College World Series champion South Carolina.
Maryland’s NCAA hopes dashed once again
Maryland will have to wait another year for a chance at the College World Series.
The Terrapins didn’t make the 64-team field for the NCAA tournament, unveiled Monday. They had hoped their 32-24 record and impressive strength of schedule would net them their first NCAA bid since 1971.
Virginia was one of seven ACC teams in the field. The Cavaliers will host Army on Friday, with Oklahoma and Appalachian State also tabbed for the Charlottesville regional.

Johnson claims NCAA singles crown with sweep
ATHENS, Ga. — Steve Johnson of Southern Cal won his second straight NCAA singles title with a 6-4, 6-4 victory Monday over Kentucky’s Eric Quigley.
Johnson, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, ended his college career with 72 consecutive victories, finishing the season 32-0.
By leading Southern Cal past Virginia in last week’s team final, Johnson became the first men’s singles champion to help his school win four straight team titles. The third-seeded Quigley ended the best season in school history at 54-8.
