A Southeast man called police this week to report he had been shot in the knee during a robbery. But when officers responded, they ended up arresting an acquaintance of the man, whose daughter implicated him in a shootout.
Marlin Reynolds, 27, faces gun-possession charges after police began investigating a robbery attempt that injured another man Wednesday afternoon outside an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Congress Street in Southeast, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Officers were called to the apartment, where a man reported he had been shot in the knee after three men approached and tried to rob him, according to court records.
Mr. Reynolds, who also lived in the apartment building, was questioned by police and he said he feared for his life because he had been shot the year before and he believed the men were going to kill him.
But while police were on the scene, a neighbor came out from her home and indicated that she had seen Mr. Reynolds firing a gun. She added that she had heard Mr. Reynolds argue with several other people just before she heard five gunshots. Police discovered that a basement window of the woman’s home had been shattered and a bullet hole was found in her hallway wall.
One officer questioned Mr. Reynolds’ daughter about the incident and asked if she was afraid, according to court records. She replied, “No. My daddy was shooting.”
Police searched Mr. Reynolds’ apartment and found a 9mm handgun in his bedroom, as well as a magazine containing eight rounds of ammunition.
As of Thursday, police are still looking for the other men involved in the shooting. Two of the men go by the nicknames “Cutty” and “Bullet,” said MPD spokeswoman Officer Tisha Gant.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled in Mr. Reynolds’ case for Friday morning. An attorney representing him could not be reached Thursday evening.
