Hewlett-Packard Co.’s payroll has grown over the past decade, partly because of its purchase of computer maker Compaq in 2002 and technology-services provider Electronic Data Systems in 2008.

On Wednesday, HP said it will cut 27,000 workers, or about 8 percent, by October 2014.

These are HP’s employment counts at the end of each fiscal year:

Oct. 31, 2001: 86,200

Oct. 31, 2002: 141,000 (reflects addition of Compaq)

Oct. 31, 2003: 142,000

Oct. 31, 2004: 151,000

Oct. 31, 2005: 150,000

Oct. 31, 2006: 156,000

Oct. 31, 2007: 172,000

Oct. 31, 2008: 321,000 (reflects addition of EDS)

Oct. 31, 2009: 304,000

Oct. 31, 2010: 324,600

Oct. 31, 2011: 349,600
