I just read “Panetta’s next war” (Comment & Analysis, Tuesday) and it really made me chuckle.

If Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta is a big believer in global warming - a theory based on carbon dioxide being released by burning fossil fuels - and believes it “has a dramatic impact on national security,” how can he justify his dozens of cross-country trips on military planes, trips whose sole mission is to ferry him to and from California? Planes use huge amounts of fossil fuels. Let’s put aside the absurd amount of money he has spent on those flights home and simply ponder the amount of carbon dioxide he personally has caused to be emitted into the atmosphere.

Perhaps he ought to try staying in Washington a little more often - for many reasons.
