PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. (AP) - Rory McIlroy felt his game was just as good as it was last week, with one small exception. He lost in a playoff last week at Quail Hollow.

Now he won’t make it to the weekend at The Players Championship.

McIlroy made a birdie on his opening hole and nothing after that. He wound up with a 4-over 76 and kept alive two streaks. He still hasn’t broken par on the TPC Sawgrass and hasn’t made the cut in three starts at The Players Championship.

The U.S. Open champion says he hasn’t figured out how to play this golf course, and it sets up difficult for him off the tee.

McIlroy had gone 22 consecutive official tournaments without missing the cut, dating to the Wells Fargo Championship last year.
