SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Apple says nearly a third of the apps available for its mobile devices have been built specifically for the iPad.

The company says there are now 585,000 applications available in its online apps store. More than 200,000 of them are for the iPad rather than what CEO Tim Cook calls “blown-up apps for smartphones.”

Apple products are popular compared with Android, BlackBerry and other devices in part because Apple has a greater number of apps developed by outside parties. Such apps extend the functionality of the devices and give users easy access to games, news, weather information and more.

The numbers Wednesday came as Apple revealed a new iPad model at an event in San Francisco.
