RICHMOND — The campaign of former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine delivered 30,866 petition signatures to the State Board of Elections on Monday ahead of a Thursday deadline to qualify for state’s 2012 U.S. Senate race.
Mr. Kaine’s wife, Anne Holton, delivered the petitions to get her husband on the ballot. Mr. Kaine is expected to be the only Democratic candidate to qualify.
Former Sen. George Allen and tea party activist Jamie Radtke delivered their petitions at noon on March 12 — the earliest candidates could submit signatures. Mr. Allen collected 26,869 signatures and Ms. Radtke had more than 21,000 signatures.
Virginia’s stringent ballot-access rules received some scrutiny after all presidential candidates but Mitt Romney and Ron Paul qualified for the Virginia presidential primary ballot. Candidates must collect 10,000 signatures from across the state, including 400 from each of Virginia’s 11 congressional districts, to qualify.
Other Republicans in the race — who still need to turn in their signatures — are Delegate Robert G. Marshall, Prince William Republican, Chesapeake Bishop E.W. Jackson, and Hampton Roads lawyer David McCormick.
