LAKELAND, Fla. — Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has a broken bone below his right eye after being struck by a bad-hop grounder, sidelining the star slugger for at least a week with Opening Day on deck.

The AL Central champions start April 5 at home against Boston, giving Cabrera less than 2 1/2 weeks to recover.

Cabrera switched from first base to third after Detroit signed Prince Fielder this off-season. He last played third base in 2008, when he started 14 games for the Tigers.

• New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter remained out of the lineup due to a stiff left calf. Jeter was not in the posted lineup for Tuesday night’s game against Pittsburgh and is not on the travel roster for Wednesday’s game with Tampa Bay at Port Charlotte.

• Catcher Nick Hundley and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a $9 million, three-year contract. Hundley hit .288 with nine homers and 29 RBI in 82 games last season.

Arenas reaches terms on contract with Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies signed Gilbert Arenas for the rest of the season, filling a need at point guard. Contract details were not immediately available.

The oft-injured free agent had not played since finishing last season with the Orlando Magic. Arenas worked out for Memphis on Monday and will be used to backup point guard Mike Conley, who hasn’t had reliable relief all season.

Arenas, 30, has averaged 21.2 points and 5.4 assists in his nine-year career but no longer is an elite player because of knee injuries. The Orlando Magic acquired Arenas from the Washington Wizards last season but waived him in December through the new amnesty clause so his contract wouldn’t count against the salary cap.

• Utah Jazz forward Josh Howard is expected to miss the rest of the season because of an injured left knee. Howard, who signed with the Jazz as a free agent in December, averaged 8.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 41 games. A 2007 All-Star, Howard has averaged 14.5 points and 5.8 rebounds a game over a nine-year career.

Hurley takes over as coach at Rhode Island

Dan Hurley agreed to a six-year deal to coach Rhode Island and rebuild the Atlantic 10 program. The Rams went 7-24 this season.

In his second season at Wagner, Hurley, 39. led the Seahawks, of the Northeast Conference, to a 25-6 record. The former star guard at Seton Hall -and son of Basketball Hall of Famer Bob Hurley - also coached nine seasons at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, N.J.

Hurley’s hire comes at the right time for the Rams. The Atlantic 10 is moving its conference tournament next season to Brooklyn and the new arena for the NBA’s Nets - a prime opportunity for A-10 schools to recruit in the New York-New Jersey area.
