ANNAPOLIS — Prince George’s County’s House delegation voted Friday to approve a 5 cent countywide bag tax, advancing the legislation to a House committee.
The delegation voted 12-9 in favor of the proposal, which will now be heard by the House Environmental Matters Committee. The vote came as something of a surprise, after the proposal had previously received an “unfavorable” report from a six-member committee within the Prince George’s delegation.
The proposal would implement a tax on plastic and paper bags at grocers and many retailers.
It would need approval by the General Assembly, as Prince George’s law requires state approval for any new local taxes.
On such bills, the Assembly generally defers to the county’s decision and green-lights the proposal, unless members have glaring concerns.
If successful, Prince George’s would become the state’s second county to institute a bag tax, joining Montgomery County.
The assembly is also considering a statewide 5-cent bag tax. If passed, it would not apply on top of any existing local bag taxes.
