LENOIR, N.C. (AP) - Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield is free on bond after turning himself in to a magistrate in North Carolina, where he is accused of stealing property belonging to Red Bull Racing and other businesses.

Mayfield surrendered himself to a magistrate in Caldwell County on Thursday afternoon and was released on $100,000 unsecured bond. Indictments by a grand jury released last month charged Mayfield with three counts of possessing property stolen from businesses, and a fourth charge of obtaining property by false pretense. He has called the latest charges “baseless.”

In November, authorities raided Mayfield’s Catawba home after which he was charged with possessing 1.5 grams of methamphetamine.

Mayfield was suspended from NASCAR after failing a random drug test at Richmond International Raceway in May 2009.
