June has never been hotter in the Washington area.
The National Weather Service said temperature reached 104 degrees around 3 p.m. on Friday at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, breaking a 78-year-old record high for the month of June. The heat index, which reflects what the temperature feels like after humidity is factored in, was 111 degrees.
Previously the all-time high for June was 101 degrees, set in 1934. Before Friday, the warmest day in 2012 was June 21 when temperatures hit 99 degrees.
The high humidity “combined with high temperatures makes the heat oppressive,” said Brian Lasorsa, meteorologist for the National Weather Service.
An equally hot weekend is expected. Temperatures are forecast to be around 100 on Saturday and 99 on Sunday.
With the approach of the Independence Day holiday, Mr. Lasorsa said the forecast doesn’t look very different and hot and humid conditions will continue through most of the week.
Unusually high temperatures were reported up and down the East Coast with many cities experiencing around 100 degrees. Temperatures as far north as Boston reached the mid-90s. Many cities are under heat advisories or excessive heat warnings.
