WIMBLEDON, ENGLAND (AP) - American Jamie Hampton won her first grass court match Monday when she upset 27th seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-4, 7-6 (1) at Wimbledon.
The 100th-ranked Hampton first practiced on grass when she arrived in London a week ago. She was questionable for Wimbledon after retiring with two herniated discs in her first-round match against Arantxa Rus at the French Open.
Hantuchova had her best Wimbledon result when she reached the quarterfinals in 2002. The first-round loss was her earliest exit in 12 trips to Wimbledon.
Hampton will play 110th-ranked Heather Watson of Britain in the second round.
