BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox traded infielder Kevin Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox for utilityman Brent Lillibridge and right-hander Zach Stewart.
Will Middlebrooks’ emergence in Boston made Youkilis expendable after a successful 8 1/2-year run with the Red Sox. The versatile All-Star, who can play both of the corner infield spots, is a career .286 hitter with 133 homers and 563 RBI.
“I just got off the phone with him, he’s very excited to join our club and he’s got a little edge to him that I like,” White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said. “I can’t tell you exactly what he said, but he wants to come in and prove some people wrong.”
The AL Central-leading White Sox, who also receive cash in the deal, have been looking for a third baseman with Brent Morel plagued by back problems.
Stewart, 25, is 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in 18 games this season. Lillibridge, 28, is hitting .175 with two RBIand seven stolen bases in 48 games.
“I loved playing here, I enjoyed it so much,” Lillibridge said. “I’m excited to see where my career will go and I’m excited to help the Red Sox.”
PADRES: Bullpen coach Darryl Akerfelds, who pitched for five seasons in the major leagues, died Sunday of pancreatic cancer. He was 50. San Diego manager Bud Black called Akerfelds “an invaluable member of the Padres coaching staff.”
Akerfelds had been bullpen coach for San Diego since June 2001. He was diagnosed with cancer in December 2010. Last season, Akerfelds attended 148 of the 162, games despite undergoing chemotherapy.

Leishman shoots final-round 62, captures title at Travelers
CROMWELL, Conn. — Marc Leishman shot an early 8-under 62 and won the Travelers Championship for his first PGA Tour title when Charley Hoffman blew a two-stroke lead. Leishman began the day six strokes behind the leaders, but made eight birdies and no bogeys, then sat in the clubhouse for more than two hours and watched. He finished at 14-under 266.
• Mark Calcavecchia won the Montreal Championship in Sainte-Julie, Quebec, for his second Champions Tour title, matching the course record with an 8-under 64 for a two-stroke victory over Brad Bryant. Calcavecchia, 52, He finished at 16-under 200.
