CAPISTRANO BEACH, CALIF. (AP) - An environmental group wants the ailing San Onofre nuclear power plant to remain offline because it says Southern California Edison sidestepped regulatory rules when it installed new equipment.
Washington-based Friends of the Earth filed a petition with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Monday asking the agency to require Edison to obtain an amendment to its license to run the seaside plant.
The group is critical of the nuclear power industry and says Edison failed to tell the NRC about extensive modifications to steam generators installed in 2009 and 2010, a claim the agency is checking.
The twin-reactor plant between Los Angeles and San Diego has been shut down since January while investigators look into excessive wear on tubing.
