OPINION:
It appears that the contestants for this fall’s presidential election are now set. At this point, I find myself in agreement with more of what Mitt Romney says than what President Obama says he stands for. But one thing still bothers me: not knowing Mr. Romney’s beliefs on immigration - especially illegal immigration.
Mr. Romney made some fairly strong statements on the matter during the primaries, but now that the dust has settled, things have grown strangely silent on this topic. He needs to clarify this without delay, so those of us who are still vacillating with regard to the candidate we will choose in November will know for sure. What does he think about amnesty for illegal aliens? What about temporary visas for seasonal farm workers, or increased border security so people find it harder to cross into the United States? What about the “anchor baby” law, chain immigration, deportation of those here illegally, E-Verify and so on?
Very germane to all this is Mr. Romney’s pick for his vice-presidential candidate. If Mr. Romney says he is going to be tough on illegal immigration but then picks a pro-amnesty partner, what does that mean? He needs to tell us now, firmly, where he stands on this very important issue.
