LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Longtime state legislator Gene Jeffress has won the Democratic Party’s nomination for Congress in Arkansas’ 4th District.
Jeffress will face Dardanelle Republican Tom Cotton in the November general election after defeating Hot Springs lawyer Q. Byrum Hurst. Cotton won the GOP nomination last month.
Jeffress said his bare-bones campaign succeeded because voters liked his personal approach. Hurst said that smacked of cronyism.
Two days after the primary, a professional conduct committee fined Hurst $1,000 for missing a deadline for a client.
The 4th District seat came open when Democratic Congressman Mike Ross said he wouldn’t seek another term.
The district covers southern Arkansas, but in redistricting this year a number of GOP-leaning areas in western Arkansas were added to it.
