EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants waived tight end Jake Ballard after he failed a physical exam.
Ballard tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the Giants’ Super Bowl victory over New England in February. In his second pro season, Ballard had a breakout year with 38 receptions for 604 yards and four touchdowns. He had five catches for 43 yards in the postseason before being hurt.
• Giants offensive lineman David Diehl was arraigned in New York City on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Diehl was arraigned on two counts of impaired driving. A judge ordered him to be released on his own recognizance and to return to court July 26. His license has been suspended.
• The Arizona Cardinals have re-signed defensive end Vonnie Holliday to a one-year contract. Holliday played in all 16 games for the Cardinals last season, recording 16 tackles. He has amassed 654 tackles, 62.5 sacks, 10 fumble recoveries and nine forced fumbles over 14 seasons in the NFL.
• The NFL suspended Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jerome Simpson for the first three games of the 2012 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Simpson was convicted this year on a felony drug charge. Law enforcement authorities tracked a shipment of 2½ pounds of marijuana to his Kentucky home last year and found another pound of the drug inside.

U.S. women’s national coach Auriemma subject of lawsuit
NEW YORK — A woman who works as a NBA security official has filed an employment discrimination lawsuit saying she was relieved of some of her duties after she spurned an advance from women’s national coach Geno Auriemma.
Kelley Hardwick is suing Auriemma, the NBA and USA Basketball. The suit was filed Monday in state Supreme Court in Manhattan.
Hardwick says Auriemma, who is coaching the women’s Olympic team, tried to kiss her during a 2009 trip to Russia for a basketball tournament, and that she pushed him away. In a statement, Auriemma said he didn’t know about the lawsuit until a media report on it, and had no comment.

Red Sox reliever Hill out least a month
MIAMI — Boston Red Sox reliever Rich Hill’s latest elbow problem has been diagnosed as a strained flexor muscle, and he’s expected to be sidelined for at least a month.
Hill, a left-hander who had ligament-replacement surgery on the elbow a year ago, went on the 15-day disabled list Sunday and was examined by a doctor Monday. Hill (1-0) has made 17 relief appearances this season and has an ERA of 2.63 ERA over 13 2/3 innings.

U.S.-Spain Davis Cup semifinal set for Gijon
GIJON, Spain — Spain will host the United States in the Davis Cup semifinals in the northern coastal city of Gijon. The Spanish Tennis Federation said the match will be played on an outdoor red clay court at the 13,000-seat Parque Hermanos Castro on Sept. 14-16. Gijon is about 235 miles north of Madrid.
