MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dustin Johnson won the St. Jude Classic on Sunday in his second event back on tour after a back injury cost him nearly three months, shooting a 4-under 66 that held off John Merrick by a stroke.

Johnson began the final round two strokes back and held a piece of the lead three different times. He won his sixth career title with consecutive birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 and finished 9-under 271.

He aggravated his back in early March lifting a jet ski at his home and didn’t return to the PGA Tour until last week at the Memorial, where he tied for 19th.

Johnson, who picked up the $1.08 million check, led by only a stroke going to No. 18. Rory McIlroy, Chad Campbell and Nick O’Hern, three of the four who had a chance to tie Johnson with a birdie, knocked their tee shots into the lake.

Tom Lehman withstood the rain and a couple of challengers to win his second straight Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Ala., finishing the Champions Tour major with a 4-under 68 to take a two-stroke victory.

Lehman overcame a near-constant drizzle and occasional heavy rain at Shoal Creek — plus hard charges by Bernhard Langer and Chien Soon Lu — for his sixth Champions Tour victory. He finished at 14-under 274. Langer and Lu shot 66 to tie for second.

French Open men’s title match suspended

PARIS — Whoever is going to make history at the French Open will have to wait at least one more day.

The final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic was called for the day because of rain Sunday with Nadal clinging to a 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 1-2 lead.

Nadal, going for his record seventh French Open title, and Djokovic, trying to become the first man in 43 years to win four straight major titles, played under a light drizzle for much of the match, which also included a 34-minute interruption in the second set.

It means the French Open won’t end on a Sunday for the first time since 1973, when Ilie Nastase’s victory over Nikki Pilic ended on Tuesday. The forecast for Paris calls for intermittent rain Monday.

The match will resume at 7 a.m. EDT and will be shown on NBC Sports Network on cable.

MIAMI — First baseman Gaby Sanchez was recalled Sunday from Triple-A New Orleans and he quickly gave the Miami Marlins’ sputtering lineup a much-needed boost.
