The shooting of a juvenile and a machete attack on two men Sunday rounded out a violent weekend in the District of Columbia.
Nine people were either shot or stabbed on Saturday and Sunday in five separate incidents, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Three men died as a result of their injuries.
In the latest incidents, two men were stabbed in Columbia Heights by a man wielding a machete around 11 p.m. Sunday in the 3600 block of 14th Street Northwest. One of the men was cut in the arm and the head, while a second man was stabbed in the midsection, MPD spokesman Officer Anthony Clay said.
In a shooting just before midnight Sunday, a juvenile was shot while riding his bicycle. The boy was in the 1300 block of Stevens Road in Southeast, riding his bike through the Barry Farm neighborhood, when two men began shooting at him, Officer Clay said. The boy was hit several times and was taken to a local hospital.
Police were unable to provide information on the condition the victims were in when they were taken to hospitals, but fire department officials said at least one of the stabbing victims was in serious condition.
The attacks followed back-to-back incidents late Saturday and early Sunday across the District that left three people injured and three dead.
Those killed were 20-year-old Charles Anthony Scott Jr. of Northeast, 30-year-old Michael Edward Jones of Northwest and 22-year-old Davon Brown of Southeast.
Mr. Scott and another man were both stabbed around 9:50 p.m. Saturday in the 5300 block of Ames Street in Northeast.
“We believe that the stabbing was a result of an argument,” MPD homicide detective Lt. Robert Alder said.
The shooting of Mr. Jones and another man was reported near the Shaw-Howard University Metro station about an hour later in the 1700 block of 7th Street Northwest. Lt. Alder said detectives have ruled robbery out as a motive in that case, but are continuing to investigate.
Mr. Brown and another man were shot just after midnight Sunday. The two were outside the Anacostia apartment building in the 1700 block of Galen Street in Southeast where Mr. Brown lived. A motive has not been determined in that shooting.
The killings bring this year’s homicide total in the District to 48, Officer Clay said. The District had recorded 60 homicides at this time last year.
Over the weekend, police also arrested one man in a July 4 gang-related shooting that killed one man and injured three others.
Calvin Shaw, 22, was charged with first-degree murder and ordered held without bond Monday in the shooting death of 19-year-old Crevontai Key. MPD officials recovered 27 shell casings from three different guns at the scene of the shooting and they think the gunmen involved have ties to the KDY gang of Northwest, according to a police affidavit filed in Mr. Shaw’s case.
