Sometimes a unique property also has a unique story. In 2005, the current owners of the home at 4338 Old Columbia Pike in Annandale were walking on a path to Mason District Park when they spotted the cedar, brick and mahogany contemporary home. It was love at first sight.

They were just beginning to house-hunt and sent a letter to the home’s then-owners detailing their admiration for the home’s design and letting the owners know they would love to make an offer if the owners ever wanted to sell it. Serendipitously, the timing was right, and the deal was made.

Today, this custom-designed Deck House-style home with exposed post-and-beam construction and walls of glass is on the market for $1,400,000. Located inside the Beltway, it rests on 1.95 rolling acres bordered on two sides by wooded parkland. In spite of its serene setting, residents have quick access to parks, the Pinecrest Golf Course, the Forest Hollow Swim Club and multiple bus and commuter routes to the Pentagon, downtown Washington, Crystal City, Old Town Alexandria and Tysons Corner.

The home has mahogany trim inside and out, an open floor plan and soaring cedar ceilings with wood beams. The use of natural materials and open spaces blurs the separation between indoors and outdoors, which is particularly fitting in this woodland setting.

The property includes an attractive parking apron with brick pavers and low brick walls, an attached three-car garage with an attic storage area and a detached two-car garage with storage or workspace. Outdoor entertaining and relaxation can be enjoyed on the screened porch off the kitchen or the wood deck that wraps around the dining room, living room and first-floor master suite.

The mahogany double front doors match the mahogany trim on the inside and outside of all windows and door frames, which are complemented by custom-designed mahogany wall sconces. Inside, the two-story foyer has a dramatic semicircular window above the front doors, frosted glass sidelights, a glass chandelier and ceramic tile flooring.

Just beyond the foyer, a few steps down lead into the dramatic living room, a two-story space with a wood ceiling, a ceiling fan and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the deck, a pond and the partially wooded yard. When they aren’t mesmerized by the outdoor views, guests and residents find the focal point in this carpeted living room is the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, which has a slate hearth, a mahogany mantel, custom-designed up-lighting and a custom-designed stone firewood storage area.

The living room also has track lighting and a wet bar with granite counters, ceramic tile flooring and custom-designed mahogany shelving. The room has a sliding glass door to the deck and an entrance into the formal dining room, which has hardwood flooring, a natural cedar cathedral ceiling and French doors that open onto the deck.

The center-island kitchen has ceramic tile flooring, a natural cedar cathedral ceiling, Corian counters with a double sink, a ceiling fan, two walls with picture windows and an operable skylight. The island has interchangeable cooktops; other appliances include a wall oven, a microwave and a side-by-side refrigerator. The kitchen has a built-in desk and a pantry.

The adjacent screened porch, accessible from the kitchen, dining room and deck, has a vaulted cedar ceiling and a ceiling fan. The porch is a perfect shady space to relax on a hot summer afternoon with a book or a good friend.

On the opposite side of the home is the first-floor master suite, which has a bedroom with a built-in mahogany platform bed and headboard, two cedar-lined walk-in closets, a natural cedar cathedral ceiling, a ceiling fan and French doors to the deck.

The adjacent master bath includes ceramic tile flooring, a natural cedar ceiling, a walk-in ceramic tile shower with a glass door, a linen closet, a bidet and a whirlpool tub. The adjacent laundry room is accessible from the master bath, the garage and the hall and includes doors to a patio and to the mudroom.

This level also has a second bedroom with a natural cedar ceiling and a double-door closet. The second full bath is nearby and has ceramic tile flooring and a natural cedar ceiling.

Upstairs, a loft overlooks the living room and the two-story foyer. The loft has hardwood flooring, clerestory windows, a ceiling fan, a natural cedar cathedral ceiling and custom-designed up-lighting. Nearby is a private office with a built-in desk, custom-designed mahogany shelving and windows on three sides framing treetop views.

The upper level also has a third bedroom with a private balcony, a walk-in closet, a double-door closet and a natural cedar cathedral ceiling. This bedroom has a private bath with ceramic tile flooring, a natural cedar ceiling, a skylight and a ceramic tile shower.

The finished lower level includes an entertainment/media room with recessed lighting and a pellet stove. The fourth bedroom has a large window, track lighting and an adjacent full bath with ceramic tile flooring, a natural cedar ceiling and an oversized shower. Next to the bath is a cedar-lined sauna with an etched glass door and multilevel benches. Nearby is an exercise room or optional fifth bedroom with a picture window and a door to a covered patio. The lower level also has a storage room with a utility sink, built-in shelving and a worktable.
