CORTLAND, N.Y. — New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has sat out most of training camp practice with tightness in his right hamstring.
Revis calls the injury “minor” after he was limited to just individual drills Sunday on the first day the Jets practiced in full pads. He said he felt tightness during a rain-soaked practice Saturday, and team trainers opted to be cautious Sunday by keeping him out of 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 team drills.
Revis stood on the sideline with his helmet off during team drills. He insists it has nothing to do with his sticky contract situation.
Revis had said he was close to holding out while looking for a new deal but decided to report on time. He says he wouldn’t be in camp if he wanted to hold out.
The contract-related speculation began because Revis has sat out practice because of unhappiness over his deal in the past. He took himself out of some drills two years ago in minicamp two years ago because he said he had a tight hamstring and was a bit “lightheaded.” Later that summer, he missed all of training camp during a contentious contract holdout.
He signed a $46 million, four-year deal before the season began but pulled his left hamstring in the second regular-season game and missed two weeks.
Texans’ Johnson pulls groin muscle
HOUSTON — Texans receiver Andre Johnson says he’ll miss “a week or so” after a minor groin injury in the team’s second morning practice. Johnson fell awkwardly running a route Sunday morning, and an MRI exam later in the day showed a “mild strain.”
“It just tightened up on me,” the five-time Pro Bowl receiver said. “I had hit the ground pretty hard, stretching out for a ball. That was pretty much it.”
Johnson missed nine regular-season games last season with hamstring injuries and was sidelined from the first organized team activities in the spring after arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
Johnson sat out about four weeks after his knee surgery in May, and he turned 31 in July. After playing in all 16 games in 2008 and ’09, Johnson sat out three games late in 2010 with a sprained right ankle. Last year, he hurt his right hamstring against Pittsburgh in October, then hurt his left hamstring against Atlanta in December.
Rams sign Long to 4-year extension
ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Rams and defensive end Chris Long agreed on a four-year contract extension through the 2016 season before the first practice of training camp.
Long, 27, was seventh in the NFL with 13 sacks last year, topping his previous best of 8.5 sacks, and had a three-sack game against the Saints.
Long’s sack total has increased every season. Last year, he had a six-game sack streak and totaled 10 in a nine-game stretch despite nursing a high left ankle sprain that limited his time in practice.
He also led the Rams with 15 quarterback pressures and 16 quarterback hits.
2012 likely Gonzalez’s last season
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez is close to retiring from the NFL. How close is up in the air.
Gonzalez said Friday that he’s 95 percent sure the upcoming season will be his last, but he wasn’t ready to completely rule out a return in 2013. Last year, he surpassed Terrell Owens, Tim Brown, Cris Carter and Marvin Harrison to become No. 2 on the league’s career receptions list with 1,149 catches.
Around the league
DOLPHINS: Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill has made his Miami debut after missing the first two days of training camp. Tannehill joined his teammates for the 8 a.m. practice about nine hours after he arrived at the team’s training facility to sign his contract. On his first training camp snap, Tannehill rolled to his right and fired a strike to wide receiver Roberto Wallace along the sideline.
49ERS: Aldon Smith apologized to San Francisco fans and teammates for two off-the-field incidents since last season ended. In his first public comments since he was stabbed at his home last month, Smith said Friday that “letting everybody down was probably the saddest part.” He also was charged in late January with driving under the influence in Miami Beach. Smith racked up a franchise-rookie record 14 sacks — best among NFL rookies — in 2011.
STEELERS: Pittsburgh signed wide receiver Antonio Brown to a five-year extension Friday that will keep him with the team through the 2017 season. Terms weren’t disclosed. Brown, set to begin his third year in the league, was selected by the Steelers in the sixth round of the 2010 draft. He has totaled 85 receptions for 1,275 yards with two touchdowns. Last year, he was second on the team with 69 receptions for 1,108 yards and and also had 1,062 return yards.
