HAVANA (AP) — Cuban dissidents are vowing to keep up their activism following the death of prominent government opponent Oswaldo Paya in a Sunday car crash.
Family, fellow dissidents and Catholic officials are at Paya’s home in Havana awaiting the arrival of his body from eastern Cuba for a funeral.
Associate Ernesto Martini says “we will continue our struggle.”
Foreign governments from the U.S. to Spain and the European Union sent messages of condolences.
The White House called Paya a “tireless champion” in “the nonviolent struggle for freedom and democratic reform in Cuba.”
Cuban official media took the rare step of reporting on Paya’s death Monday, but without mentioning that he was a government opponent.
Havana considers the dissidents paid stooges trying to undermine the revolution at Washington’s behest.
