When architect Wayne L. Good, owner of Good Architecture in Annapolis, designs a home or an addition, the end result always includes a few signature elements, such as repeated window patterns that carry light and visibility from one room to the next.
While every home Mr. Good designs is likely to be filled with natural light, French doors and transoms, a particularly distinctive feature found in many of his projects is the use of seamless windows that wrap around a corner in a three-pane-over-three-pane pattern.
These three-over-three windows can be found in the custom-designed kitchen addition in the residence at 5327 Reno Road NW in the District’s Chevy Chase neighborhood. This European-style kitchen has windows and French doors on three sides, along with a soaring tray ceiling with wraparound transom windows.
On the market for $1,499,999, this home has been designed for family life as well as entertaining. When Mr. Good renovated the home, he carefully restored and repeated the original millwork in every room to unite the new and older spaces seamlessly.
The front door, a glass one with sidelights and a decorative transom, opens into the center-hall foyer, which includes the original oak handrail and balustrade on the stairs leading to the upper level. To the right of the foyer, French doors open into the living room, which has a wood-burning fireplace with a terra-cotta tile hearth.
The living room has a faux-painted stone wall and a picture window. Two sets of French doors link the living room with the library, which has two walls of built-in bookcases, floor-to-ceiling windows and a beadboard ceiling. The living room also has a wide opening into the dining room, which has oversized casement windows and several archways with detailed crown molding that open to the kitchen and adjacent wet bar.

The wet bar, part of an open entertaining area perfect for parties, has a custom-designed bar with cherry cabinetry, a granite counter and a tumbled-stone tile backsplash. French doors open from the bar area onto a balcony with steps to the backyard.
French doors also link the kitchen with the balcony. Two of the floor-to-ceiling windows in the kitchen include stained-glass inserts. Adjacent to the kitchen is a mudroom with custom-designed cabinetry and a glass door to the driveway.
The kitchen has a professional-grade Viking range and double ovens, a tumbled-stone tile backsplash and a dramatically different custom-designed wood mantel with pullout wood spice racks in place of a traditional range hood. The kitchen’s custom-designed cherry cabinetry has an abundance of drawers and open shelving that complement the honed granite counters. Along one wall are a sideboard and breakfront imported from France.
The kitchen also has a recessed alcove for the stainless steel refrigerator, a microwave in a drawer, hand-blown glass pendant lighting, a dishwasher, two stainless steel sinks and a custom-designed baking station with a pop-up mixer stand.
The current owners have a massive table at the center of the kitchen under the nearly 13-foot ceiling. While the table does not convey, future residents may want to consider using a similar setup to take full advantage of this light-filled space.
The main level also has a first-floor master suite, although the bedroom could be used as a sitting room or guest suite. French doors open off the foyer into the bedroom, which has a picture window as well as a side window. A pocket door with frosted glass links the bedroom to the dressing room, which has a wall of built-in closets. Another pocket door with frosted glass leads from the dressing room into the luxurious bath, which has a glass-enclosed marble steam shower, cherry cabinets and a beverage bar.
Upstairs, the second master suite has hardwood flooring in the bedroom and a newly renovated private bath with travertine marble flooring, a seamless glass shower door and a vessel sink with a distinctive glass surround.
The upper level has two additional bedrooms, each with hardwood flooring. One of these bedrooms is exceptionally large and can be divided into sitting and sleeping spaces. These bedrooms share a renovated hall bath with a double porcelain vanity and porcelain tile flooring. The upper-level hall has a double-door cedar closet.
The finished lower level includes a wine cellar with antique wood doors imported from Scotland. Nearby are a kitchenette with ceramic tile flooring, a microwave, cabinets and a refrigerator, plus a contemporary-style full bath with a glass-enclosed shower and ceramic tile flooring. The adjacent fifth bedroom has track lighting, a wall of built-in closet and shelving systems and French doors that open onto a patio.
Nearby is a “creative” room, one that could be used as a playroom, homework station or home office, with a wall of floor-to-ceiling built-in shelving with glass-front and open shelves and a long granite counter to accommodate several workstations. This room has a stained-glass window and stone flooring.
Around a corner from this room is a spacious family room with wall-to-wall carpeting, recessed lighting and windows on three sides, including French doors to the backyard.
The yard includes a basketball half court with a shock-resistant surface and a court-side bluestone patio. The yard is partially enclosed by a stucco-and-wood fence and has been professionally landscaped. Tucked closer to the house are two covered stone patios with beadboard ceilings and ceiling fans.
