OPINION:
There seems to be a lot of confusion about how Mitt Romney might handle Obamacare in light of the creation of Massachusetts’ statewide health care system.
Here are a few facts. Mr. Romney was the Republican governor of a predominantly Democratic state. A majority of the citizens of Massachusetts wanted state-provided health care and as governor, he was constrained to bow to the decision of the majority. The state House and Senate crafted the health program to be approved by then-Gov. Romney. During the approval process, Mr. Romney exercised his veto right 800 times over various points of provision and enforcement in order to assist in the shaping of the final document.
Rather than ignoring or denying the will of the people of Massachusetts, or seeking to derail the entire bill, he joined in the process and used his position as governor and his insight into the issue to produce the final product. This is exactly what he was elected to do.
