OPINION:
I liken President Obama’s State of the Union address last week to the speeches given by the character Dennis Hopper played in the movie “Water World.” Hopper played the captain of a ragtag group on an old oil tanker searching for land in a world that had flipped upside down and flooded.
Like Mr. Obama, he gave great speeches to the masses. His talks were full of hope and lies and told the people that he knew land was not far off.
In the film, Hopper throws the people some Spam and cigarettes, looks over to his second-in-command and says something to the effect that the gifts will keep them rowing for a while before they figure out anything.
Likewise, Mr. Obama has thrown out oratorical Spam to the people of this country for the past three years - and many believe him. After watching how sincere his speech was this year, I am led to conclude that Mr. Obama believes what he is saying, even though it is untrue.
The biggest difference between Mr. Obama and the Hopper character is that in “Water World,” there was no class warfare because everyone was dressed in rags and suffered. Under Mr. Obama’s misguided sense that we should all be wearing rags, it’s my opinion that we are headed for a world where no one will be able to keep his head above water.
